General Medicine

General practice or family medicine is that discipline of medicine where any member of a family, from a neonate to the elderly, seeks medical care, attention or advice from a primary care (or first point of contact) doctor. This may be for an isolated condition such as an acute injury or infection, to regular care and monitoring such as with a pregnancy.

The GP may manage the patient himself, or decide to refer on to a specialist, hospital, or allied health professional (such as a physiotherapist).
